Pilkahduksia toivosta – elämä miehityksen alla
November 29 @ 17:30 - 23:30
The year 2017 marks 50 years of Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. As a reminder of this long-standing conflict, the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme for Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) organizes three events in the cities of Tampere, Helsinki and Turku. We will be joined by speakers from one of the most prestigious grassroots peace movements in Israel and Palestine, Combatants for Peace. The egalitarian, bi-national, grassroots organization was founded on the belief that the cycle of violence can only be broken when Israelis and Palestinians join forces. Committed to joint nonviolence since its foundation, CFP works to both transform and resolve the conflict by ending Israeli occupation and all forms of violence between the two sides and building a peaceful future for both peoples. Moran Zamir, an Israeli ex-soldier who fought in Gaza, and Ahmed Helou, former Palestinian member of Hamas, are both former combatants who have laid down their weapons and now practice joint nonviolence in the present to lay the foundations for a nonviolent future. They will discuss the effects of this prolonged occupation on both the Palestinians and Israelis. The discussion will be held in English.
The coming together of people like Zamir and Helou represents a glimpse of hope for peace in this difficult conflict; where leaders have failed time and again to deliver progress towards a just peace, regular people have found new grassroots ways to connect and understand each other. In the main event in Helsinki on Wednesday, we will also experience a live performance by the acclaimed Palestinian indie musician Rasha Nahas.
